What is the Proper Monetary Amount for a Wedding Gift?

I am 27. My brother, 29, and his fiancée are getting married in a few months. Traditionally, what is an acceptable amount of money to give as a wedding gift?

Dear Strapped for Cash,

There is no traditional appropriate amount. One amount may seem generous to some and yet lacking to another. So, money is not a great gift. In truth, I find it inappropriate, but I'm from California.

Perhaps you could purchase something from their registry or give them something you think they will like.
